'Witches of East End’ Casts Its Spell On Summer Television
Ever since Samantha first started crinkling her nose and making magic on ‘Bewitched,’ those mystical Ladies (and sometimes Men) have been casting spells on television audiences who just can’t get enough of their fantastical ways. The past few years have seen witches become a staple of television programming with stand-outs including the Emmy Nominated Women of ‘American Horror Story: Coven’ and the Fairies and otherworldly spirits on HBO’s ‘True Blood.’
Taking a light-hearted approach to the dark arts, Lifetime’s ‘Witches of East End’ brings a fresh approach to witchcraft with a format that’s equal parts comedy, horror and soap opera. Fans of ‘Charmed’ and Joss Whedon’s classic ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ will find themselves mesmerized with this story focused on the Beauchamp Clan. Julia Ormond plays Joanna, a centuries old Witch cursed with eternal life and her two daughters, wild child Freya (Jenna Dewan Tatum) and shy bookworm Ingrid (Rachel Boston). Adding a healthy dose of comic relief is Actress Mädchen Amick as Wendy, Joanna’s shape-shifting, wisecracking sister who has the ability to transform into a cat and waltz her way into one zany misadventure after another.
Following its own direct linear mythology, the show has grown leaps and bounds from its first season with new storylines, a darker tone and bigger production values in its second season, which debuted earlier this month on Lifetime. If you’re a fan of fantasy, romance and suspense with a touch of humour, then these witches will definitely cast you under their spell. You can check out the entire First Season of ‘Witches of East End’ on Netflix and Season Two airs Sundays at 9pm on the Lifetime Television Network.
